Mitt Romney: '​It Was An Honor To Have Been Considered For Secretary of State'

Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson is reportedly President-elect Donald Trump's pick for the post.

After apparently being passed over by President-elect Donald Trump for the position of Secretary of State, Mitt Romney shared his first public statement on his would-have-been, could-have-been appointment Monday night.

Writing on Facebook, he spoke highly of a man he once scathingly criticized, and expressed optimism that would have seemed laughable this time last March.

Romney's statement reads in full:

It was an honor to have been considered for Secretary of State of our great country. My discussions with President-elect Trump have been both enjoyable and enlightening. I have very high hopes that the new administration will lead the nation to greater strength, prosperity and peace.

The statement followed shortly after Trump, through Twitter, announced he would name his Secretary of State appointment Tuesday morning. Tillerson emerged Saturday as the expected candidate.
