Mitt Romney Reportedly One of Four Contenders for Secretary of State Under Donald Trump
After dinner with the President-elect, Newt Gingrich accuses former Massachusetts governor of "sucking up" to Trump.
It's down to four, after Mitt Romney's dinner with President-elect Donald Trump Tuesday night.
It was the second meeting for the two men, who have by all appearances made amends despite a campaign season during which Romney served as president of the so-called "Never Trump" movement. Now, as he's reportedly one of few under consideration for Secretary of State, Romney is not only enthused, but apparently downright chipper about meeting with the man he once scorned.
As we noted earlier in the week, that apparent change of heart has not gone unnoticed by Trump's surrogates, who have taken to the airwaves in all-out revolt against the possibility of Secretary of State Romney.

"You have never, ever, in your career seen a wealthy adult who is independent, has been a presidential candidate, suck up at the rate that Mitt Romney is sucking up," Gingrich told radio host Laura Ingraham Wednesday, in one of several instances of Trump supporters condemning Romney's consideration as Secretary of State.
He, Rudy Giuliani and two unnamed contenders are in the running, the communications director for the President-elect told reporters, including The Boston Globe's Matt Viser.
Trump has narrowed Secretary of State list down to four finalists: Romney and Giuliani (and two unnamed others!) No announcement this week.

Does all this sound like a TV drama? A reality show quest to see who the surviving contestant will be? That's not so far out of line. Trump, after all, comes to the presidency via "The Apprentice," and knows better than perhaps anyone how to create drama and tension.
