Blown Circuit Caused Outage on the Hill

Nearly 400 Belmont Hill households in the dark for up to two hours Thursday night. Also, updated substation public meeting schedule.

An underground circuit failure near the Belmont Hill School cause a significant portion of Belmont Hill to go dark yesterday night, Aug. 19, according to the Belmont Municipal Light Department. 

The area effected by the blackout that began at 9:52 p.m. included Longmeadow Road, Stony Brook, Crestview Road and Birch Hill Road.

According to Kristina Frizzell, BMLD spokeswoman, the power was restored in pieces to homes with the longest outages being less than two hours.

The black out affected between 300 to 400 customers.

        •   Aug. 9: Mill and Concord Road; blown circuit.

  • Aug. 4: Beech Street around Town Field; a blown cutout fuse.
  • July 28: An overvoltage condition on BMLD's 13.8 kV system resulting in a five second "hiccup."
  • July 22:  Mill Street and Upper Concord Avenue area lost their power.

        •    July 16: Transformer–related outage hit 20 homes on Belmont Street. 

  • July 13: nearly 22 homes were affected on Becket and Watson roads due to a transformers malfunction.

BMLD sets the dates for public meeting on substation

The Belmont Municipal Light Department has released a revised list of public meeting for rate payers to discuss and comment on the location selected by a BMLD subcommittee to place a new $39 million substation at the Purecoat North on Hittinger Street at a cost of $6 million for the land.

The meetings will be held at the Beech Street Center at 266 Beech Street from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., according to the following schedule:

         • Precinct 1 and 2: Wednesday, Sept. 15

  • Precinct 3 and 4: Wednesday, Sept. 22
  • Precincts 5 and 6: Thursday, Sept. 23
  • Precincts 7 and 8: Tuesday, Sept. 28

BMLD customers who cannot attend the meeting scheduled for their precinct may attend any of the scheduled meetings.
