Fire Log: Truck Delivers a Hot Product to Shaw's

Incidents handled by Belmont Fire, including more microwave mishaps at McLean Hospital.

Aug. 22 – At 11:16 a.m., units were dispatched to McLean Hospital on Mill Street for a cooking fire that was confined to the container.  There was food burnt inside a microwave in the second floor kitchen.  The fire did not spread and the facilities staff removed the damaged microwave.

Aug. 24 – At 3:41 p.m., firefighters were once again dispatched McLean Hospital for a cooking fire that was confined to the container.

Aug. 25 ­– At 11:55 a.m., all companies of the Belmont Fire Department were dispatched to Shaw's Market at 535 Trapelo Rd. for a motor vehicle fire.  The truck driver on the scene reported seeing flames coming from his truck while driving, but was unsure as to why it was occurring.  Engine 1 utilized a 1 3/4" hose to extinguish the flames.  The vehicle's operator was informed by the fire department that his truck was unable to move due to damage to the fuel line and engine. The operator said he would contact his company regarding the incident. Fire companies were unable to gain access the cargo compartment.

More popcorn mishaps at McLean

Aug. 26 – At 10:43 a.m., units were dispatched to McLean Hospital on Mill Street for a smoke detector that had gone off. The incident occurred on the second floor in a microwave where they found burnt popcorn.

Contractor builds fire pit

Aug. 27 – At 11:12 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a house on Common Street were they found an outdoor rubbish fire. The investigation discovered that a contractor was burning construction materials in a fire pit in the backyard. He was ordered to extinguish the fire and he complied.

Hazard close to home

Aug. 28 – At 4:58 p.m., units were dispatched to the fire department's headquarters for exposure to chemicals being used forfloor repair on the trucks. Firefighters on call who inhaled the fumes were greeted with throat irritation, nausea and headaches. Crews were immediately relocated to Station 2 until work complete and the building properly ventilated.
