Iannuzzi's Independent Path To Governor's Council

Belmont resident believe his background and viewpoint will serve state on Council.

Don't be surprised when you see Nicholas Iannuzzi's name on the November ballot.

No, the Belmont resident is not seeking another term on the town's Zoning Board of Appeal (he can't if he tried: the position is an appoint one).

Rather than upholding the town's zoning bylaws, Iannuzzi wants to serve on the eight-member Governor's Council.

Running as an independent in the third Council district, Iannuzzi is seeking the seat current occupied by Marilyn M. Petitto Davaney.

In a press release distributed to media outlets, Iannuzzi said he wants "to bring a common sense approach to the important work that needs to be done on behalf of our district and the commonwealth. Through my experience as a businessman, attorney, public servant, husband and father, I intend to do just that."

The Massachusetts Governor's Council is a state-wide elected board with two-year terms whose main job is to advice and consent the governor on judicial nominations.

It also appoints and removes justices of the peace, issues pardons and approves the transfer of money from the state Treasury to the governor.

"At a time when courts are struggling with ever shrinking budgets, the appointment of judges by the governor is critical to a judicial system that is open to everyone," notes Iannuzzi.

"The real world experience I have with the Massachusetts legal system makes me well qualified for this position. I will be a diligent and independent reviewer of the governor's recommendations," said Iannuzzi.

He believes his independent status allows for a fresh viewpoint, coupled with his real world experience – putting himself through law school, building his own law practice – is "an example of the common man succeeding through hard work, and I will bring that type of attitude to the Governor's Council."

The Governor's Council is comprised of eight councilors from eight councilor districts; each district consists of the entirety of five contiguous Massachusetts Senate Districts.

The Third Councilor District covers towns such as Belmont, Acton, Brookline, Bedford, Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Lowell, Marlborough, Newton, Waltham, Watertown, Weston and parts of Boston, Lexington, Wellesley and Cambridge,

"I will ensure that my responsibilities as a Governor's Councilor are met with a consistent and conscientious course of action. I will take a common sense approach to my position and perform my duties in a fair and no-nonsense manner," he said.

The Boston College undergraduate who earned a law degree from Suffolk University Law School, Iannuzzi is a partner in the Needham firm of Orsi, Arone, Rothenberg, Iannuzzi and Turner, focusing on family law.
