Police Log: "Grandson" Takes Resident For $1,800
Police activity for the week in Belmont.
Debt Collection Mistake
Aug. 10 – At 12:17 p.m., police responded to a call from a Channing Road man who wanted to report suspicious activity concerning his credit card. The resident was receiving a series of calls from a debt collection company that demand he pay $8,600 for an unpaid balance on his credit card. The resident called the card company who told him his account was current and he did not owe the bank any amount. The resident said he then discussed the matter with the debt collection company.
Solicitors Out of Bounds

Aug. 11 – at 2:39 p.m., a resident called police to a Warwick Road location to complain about solicitors going door-to-door. Police discovered that the two men thought they were still in Cambridge and did not realize they needed a license for Belmont.

Aug. 13 – At 3:59 p.m., a caller to the state said he placed a $1,840 IRS check in the glove compartment earlier in the day and when he went to look for it later, it was gone. A little while later, the same caller told police that the check was indeed in the glove compartment, stuffed in the back.
Resident Scammed by Phony "Grandson"
Aug. 14 – At 9:46 a.m., a Hill Road woman told police that she was woken up a few days earlier by a frantic phone call from a person crying on the other end of the phone who said he was her "grandson." He told her he was injured in a terrible accident and needed $950 for medical treatment. The Belmont resident quickly send the amount – including an $86 fee – to the address supplied by her "grandson." The next day the same person told the Hill Road resident he need $780 to get his car back from the towing operator. Again, the grandmother sent the amount – including a $66 fee – to the address supplied. The next day, the Hill Road resident called her grandson to see how he was feeling after the accident.
"What accident, grandma?" was the answer. The scam artists took $1,730 from the woman who spent an extra $152 in fees for a grand total of $1,882. The scam is under investigation.
Out-of-Town Custody
Aug. 14 – At 11:54 p.m., Belmont Police assisted a Watertown Police officer who had taken two intoxicated youths into custody outside of Andros Diner on Trapelo Road.
Drunk and Unwanted
Aug. 15 – At 3:24 a.m., a Benjamin Road resident called police after her 18-year-old son returned intoxicated and she did not want him in her house. When officers arrived, the young man had fled the area.
Violating Restraining Order
Aug.16 – At 7:38 a.m., A Clifton Road resident came to police headquarters to inform police that a 33-year-old Somerville man was violating a domestic restraining order she had placed against him. He had been sending emails and she saw him in Boston watching her. A criminal complaint has been filed.
