The Week In Review: Beer, Music and Roads

The news in Belmont during the week ending Aug. 21.

The Craft Beer Cellar, the craft beer store to be located on Leonard Street in Belmont Center, was granted a retail liquor license by the Board of Selectmen in what can be considered a record two minutes. The store, owned by Ash Street couple Suzanne Schalow and Kate Baker, has a planned opening of Nov. 1.

The Belmont Summer Music Festival concluded Sunday with another standing room only audience at the Beech Street Center. Nathaniel Meyer conducted and programmed the program of Beethoven and Mozart that won a second standing ovation from residents who are hoping the festival is an annual event.

The Board of Selectmen also approved a plan for the town and neighboring Arlington to share the position of Sealer of Weights and Measure, saving the town

The continued road construction to repair and replacement of the water main along Trapelo Road and Belmont Street resulted in partial street closures in and around Cushing Square and causing detours for motorists.

Roadwork was also discussed at the Board of Selectmen meeting as the Community Development Department noted the signing of a contract to rebuild a stretch of Concord Street near Somerset Street, plans for the repaving and repair of Belmont Center and working to prevent flooding in the Beaver Brook area.

The Municipal Light Department has announced the schedule for public meetings to discuss the placement of the new substation at the Purecoat North parcel. The Department also noted that a circuit failure near the Belmont Hill School caused 400 households to be without electricity for up to two hours Thursday.

In a nice and well-earned gesture, Selectmen honored Anthony Amedio of the Highway Department who on his own time has been watering roses on the delta across from the Police Station during the current dry spell.
