Reading, cooling and eating: summer activities.
Summer in the town is two thirds done. Things to do on your summer check list.
Reading with Annie
Lamenting the closing of the Charlesbank Books in Belmont Center? How about trying Annie's Book Store?

This store is part of an association of like-named stores that reach across much of the East Coast. Not the fancy digs of the typical bookstore nor will you find stacks of the latest bestseller in the front window.
What you will find is a good quality of pre-read – um, used – books that sell for half of the original cover price. But the store also has access to most books in print, with the ability to order a new copy for you. New books are always discounted 20 percent off regular retail prices and they'll ship anywhere in the continental United States for a nominal fee.

The Underwood Legacy
Summer's nearly two-thirds done and by now you should have ventured over to the Underwood Pool. Why? You should visit this old-style outdoor pool in which the deep side is separated for several reasons.
It's historic; it's the oldest community pool in the country. It's literary: while he won't say it, the pool in Tom Perrotta's novel "Little Children" is surely based on the Underwood Pool.
It's social; because open space is fairly limited around the pool, you'll be in contact, literately with just about everyone at the pool. Finally, it's hot and the Underwood is the best place to cool off. If you don't like to swim or splash about, you can read a book sitting in the water at the far end of the pools deep side.
Entry is free with a season pass or you can purchase a day pass at the pool. The Underwood is located adjacent to the Belmont Public Library at 455 Concord Ave. The phone is 617-993-2600.
Sergi's Place
Everyone is concerned with the freshness of the food they purchase. "Is it fresh enough?" "How fresh is it?"
How about as fresh as pulling it from the ground? Is that fresh enough?
Sergi Farms, Belmont's last remaining farm, on Glenn Road is the place to pick up what's in season because they are the vegetables growing. Just drive to the main building, get out and enjoy.
Currently available at the farm:
- Broccoli
- Tomatoes
- Zucchini
- Corn
- Eggplant
- Herbs
- U-Pick flowers
Open Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sergi Farms is located at 34 Glenn Rd.
