Braintree Elder Affairs Salutes Flag Day

A Flag Day celebration was held at the Braintree Department of Elder Affairs on Friday, June 14.

Patriotic songs and history of the star spangled banner were all part of the Braintree Department of Elder Affair's first ever Flag Day celebration on June 14.

Braintree's Veterans Agent Dick Walsh led much of the well-attended event. The seniors also joined accordionist Paul Cavallaro to sing the National Anthem, "God Bless America" and "You're a Grand Old Flag."

Walsh shared many interesting flag facts, such as the U.S. has had 27 official flags, as stars were added and other alterations were made over the years.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan was also at the event Friday. The mayor discussed how the American flag is a symbol of freedom and democracy around the world.

"If there's anybody or any group that understands what our flag represents, it's our veterans," Sullivan said, on a day that marked not just the creation of the flag, but the formation of the United States Army.
