Braintree Family Participates in Annual Families of SMA Walk
The Norton family of Braintree organized and walked in the 13th Annual Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Walk in Hingham.

Nine hundred people participated in the 13th Annual Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy New England Chapter Cure SMA Walk-n-Roll at Wompatuck State Park last month. Among the large turnout were family and friends of 10-year-old Owen Norton from Braintree.
The annual event raises money to find a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a group of inherited motor nerve diseases that cause muscle weakness and atrophy.
Early reports indicate this year's walk raised over $130,000, a $20,000 improvement on the 12th annual walk.
Silvia and Brian Murphy started the walk in 2001, after losing two infants to SMA. The Nortons and the Farrell family of Quincy joined the planning group a few years later.
On May 18, Team Norton participated in its first walk since the passing of Owen's mother Kathy, just three months ago.
