Braintree's Peter Herbst Completes Leadership South Shore 2023

HANOVER, MA — Leadership South Shore, a renowned leadership development program created by South Shore Bank in collaboration with the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, held a ceremony celebrating its 2023 graduating class at Laura’s Center for the Arts in Hanover. Founded in 2016, Leadership South Shore is the area’s most coveted professional development program with a goal of cultivating community-minded leaders who create positive change for our region and its residents.

Among the graduates is Peter Herbst of Braintree. Herbst is the Principal Attorney at Herbst Law Group where he specializes in estate planning, estate administration, and elder law. He is also the Director of Sustainable Braintree, Inc, a community advocacy group committed to helping Braintree residents, businesses and local government conserve energy, promote clean and renewable energy, protect the environment and live sustainably.

“We created this program to help make our community a better place and create involvement, to get people to know what’s going on across all sectors of our community and how each impacts our quality of life,” said Leadership South Shore Founder and South Shore Bank CEO Jim Dunphy. “It’s significant that we’ve taken more than 100 people through this program over the past six years. There’s now a whole network to tap into and help drive our community.”

“The graduation ceremony served as an opportunity for program alums to connect and share stories about how the experience and training has made a profound impact on them. The event also jump-starts the 2023-24 Leadership South Shore season. Having the alums and new cohort together instantly sparks the formation of this new network,” said Joanne Tully, Community Relations Officer and Leadership Program Administrator, South Shore Bank.

“Having grown up on the South Shore and returning here to raise my family, I was drawn to the opportunities that Leadership South Shore had to offer,” said Holly Petersen, Founder of Petersen Coaching & Consulting and a 2023 Leadership South Shore graduate, as she addressed the graduating class. “Through the Leadership South Shore program, personally, I have gained a more diverse perspective beyond my sector, cultivated invaluable connections, and was reminded that industries are multifaceted with hidden layers waiting to be discovered. I’m profoundly grateful for the opportunities, connections, and resources that the Leadership Soth Shore Program has provided me and our cohort.”

“We’re all privileged to some extent by our own personal situations. But I hope you got a higher sense of that privilege from seeing how many people aren’t quite as lucky as we all are,” said South Shore Chamber of Commerce CEO & President Peter Foreman as he addressed the cohorts. “What makes us special isn’t that we’re without problems or challenges, it’s that we have leaders like you and all the others that you’ve met who are stepping up to address those challenges for everybody in the area.”

Leadership South Shore is a thought-provoking program that examines regional challenges and opportunities through expert panel discussions, virtual and on-site visits, presentations, focus groups, interactive training, and other innovative, experiential activities. Leadership South Shore has produced more than 100 highly motivated graduates who take the knowledge obtained during this program to make a positive impact in their workplaces and communities.

“The South Shore Leadership Program is a great program. Each day was a completely eye-opening experience where I took away something new each time and day that I came out of there,” said Ryan Austin, VP of Austin Insurance Agency and a 2023 Leadership South Shore Graduate. “I would recommend it to everybody. It’s just a great program to get involved with the community and the people that you go in there with, you just make such great connections.”

Leadership South Shore runs from October through May, with a September graduation. Participants attend a program day once each month during fall and spring.
