Braintree Rescue Crews Free Man Trapped Under Bucket Truck Friday

BRAINTREE, MA - First responders rescued a seasonal landscape worker who became stuck under the bucket of a cherry picker truck after falling 40 feet while trimming some trees in Braintree Friday afternoon, Braintree police confirmed.

"This afternoon police, Braintree Fire and Brewster Ambulance responded to an equipment accident where a worker was pinned under the bucket of a cherry picker truck," according to a police statement. "Crews from E3, E1, L2 and Rescue 2 stabilized the truck and worked for 20 minutes to free the patient using shovels and at times their hands."

Police described the situation as "an equipment accident."

"We would like to highlight the crews on on Braintree Fire for their amazing work today," the statement continued. "Well done."

According to news reports, fire department officials initially responded to the call at a home on Mayflower Road just before 3 p.m. Rescue workers were able to stabilize the truck and extricate the worker from underneath the bucket using shovels.

He was conscious and alert after falling 40 feet when he was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

WBZ-TV reported that he suffered extensive lower body injuries and that the truck was new, registered last month. The seasonal worker started the job a couple of days ago, according to the report.

According to a WCVB-TV report, the 28-year-old Quincy man suffered two broken legs and other injuries when a pin in the hydraulic arm of the company's new bucket truck came out, a coworker said. The injured man was conscious, talking and able to move his toes.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
