Training Wheels Completes First Motorcycle Course for Hearing Impaired

A Braintree resident was one of 10 deaf riders to finish the two-day motorcycle training program.

A Braintree resident was among the 10 new motorcyclists to complete a unique training program for deaf riders. The course, led by Training Wheels, took place in Framingham last weekend.

Erin Barre, of Braintree, earned her motorcycle license after completing the classroom and riding hours required. The program was taught by Training Wheels instructors and a sign language interpreter.

"It was thrilling," said Training Wheels owner Rich Sigel. "I'm proud not just of the riders, but the interpreters and instructors. They worked their tails off."

Sigel, who has seen 20,000 riders complete the program in the past 13 years, said the learning pace and issues between hearing and deaf students were identical.

"You can see it click," said Sigel.

The program was such a success, Sigel is planning to run another class for deaf riders in September.

The instructors will rely on their experience to slightly tweak the curriculum for the future. After having some trouble translating motorcycle jargon like "swerve," and "twist the throttle," Sigel said he'll work on alternative phrases.

"We're going to use their terminology," said Sigel.
