Zoning Approved For New Thayer Ice Rinks

The zoning change allows the Thayer Academy South Athletic Campus to have an indoor athletic facility.

BRAINTREE, MA — The town council approved zoning that will make way for a hockey venue at the Thayer Academy South Athletic Complex.

Tuesday’s approval means that the 13.7 acre property on Washington Street is now in the highway business district, rather than residential B. The proposed building, which has been approved by the planning board, calls for an 86,000-square-foot indoor athletic complex with one-and-a-half hockey rinks and an indoor field turf.

Carl Johnson, an attorney on the project, said the facility will have a private operator who will lease the taxable property from the school.

“It is important to the community, there’s a huge demand for these recreational facilities,” Johnson said.

The vote passed the committee 7-1, with Councilor Stephen O’Brien voting no and Council President Charles Ryan not present.

The building will be the first time that the school's hockey program has their own facility.
