BURLINGTON, MA — If you’re like many of your Burlington neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Burlington area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  • People Helping People works to establish and sustain a community-wide effort to help meet the basic needs of residents of Burlington, Mass.
  • Wee Care Burlington strives to help parents and caretakers to be able to provide basic essential needs for children.
  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell without discrimination to strengthen families in 16 Northern Middlesex communities by bringing people together to build and repair safe, energy efficient, affordable homes, communities and hope.
  • Hope and Friendship Metastatic Breast Cancer Foundation enhances the lives of women and men with a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer (Stage IV), and their families, by offering free support groups, resources for learning and networking, therapeutic activities, scholarships and creative retreats.
  • Beyond Tops integrates children with mental and physical disabilities into the community through sports.
