Burlington Police Department, Officer Earn AAA Traffic Safety Awards

BURLINGTON, MA — A Burlington police officer and the department as a whole have been recognized for improving the town's traffic safety. The award comes from the American Automobile Association's (AAA) Community Traffic Safety Award Program.

Chief Thomas Browne is pleased to report that the Burlington Police Department was awarded a Gold Award for traffic safety from AAA Northeast and that Officer David M. McLean was named a Traffic Hero for his work on improving traffic safety in town.

The AAA Community Traffic Safety Awards Program honors police departments and individual officers who go above and beyond in their efforts to promote traffic safety.

The Burlington Police Department was recognized in its entirety by AAA Northeast for its efforts to use patrol, enforcement, as well as a Traffic Safety Committee to improve safety on town roads. The Traffic Safety Committee is made up of representatives from police, the Engineering Department, the Planning Board and the Fire Department, with meetings focused on how to improve safety around town.

Officer McLean, who is a member of the Burlington Police Traffic Division, was recognized individually for a number of efforts he has made to improve safety in Burlington, including collaborating with local schools to teach school bus safety to students, and organizing community car seat checks. Officer McLean also helped obtain a grant that enabled the department to purchase numerous car seats of varying sizes for those in need.

“Officer McLean’s commitment to educate the community on traffic safety and provide workable solutions to community concerns is evident in his work product,” commanders wrote in his nomination for the award.

“Ensuring that our roads and streets in Burlington are safe for the motoring public is one of our key goals here at the Burlington Police Department, so we are proud to receive the Gold Award for traffic safety, and to see one of our officers recognized as a Traffic Hero,” said Chief Browne. “As always, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to slow down, don’t drive distracted, and please keep safety in mind whenever you’re behind the wheel.”
