Burlington's Bed Bath & Beyond Is 1 Of 5 MA Stores Closing

BURLINGTON, MA — Bed Bath & Beyond in Burlington will be closing its doors, the beleaguered home goods retailer announced Monday.

The Burlington store, located at 3 Abbott Park, appeared on a list of 87 Bed Bath & Beyond stores in 30 states that are scheduled to close, which was posted on the Union, New Jersey-based company's website. Four other Massachusetts stores were on the list: Dedham, North Dartmouth, Raynham and Pittsfield.

The company did not announce when the stores will be closing.

When contacted by Patch about the store closing, a person answering the phone at the Burlington location seemed to confirm the news.

"This store is closing, we just found out," said the company employee, who then hung up the phone.

In August 2022, Bed Bath & Beyond announced that it would be closing 150 of its lowest-performing stores nationwide and laying off 20 percent of its staff. A month earlier, the company had announced that sales were down 26 percent in the second quarter of fiscal year 2022 compared to 2021.

According to USA Today, the retailer announced the shuttering of 62 stores in September and 56 more in January. Massachusetts locations in Dorchester, Milford and Seekonk were among the stores that have recently closed.

CBS News reported Monday that Bed Bath & Beyond is expected to file for bankruptcy soon. The station reported that last week the company said it could no longer pay its debts and had received a default notice from its lender.

Bed Bath & Beyond told CBS News on Monday that it was working with its advisors "to consider multiple paths."

The company also announced that it would close its entire chain of Harmon drugstores and five BuyBuy Baby stores.

Currently, there are 17 Bed Bath & Beyond stores still operating in Massachusetts.
