Check Out the Fire Department's New 'Burlington Engine 1'

Members of the Burlington Fire Department were busy last week training on the department's newest piece of equipment. 

The department recently received a new Pierce fire engine. The new engine has been named Burlington Engine 1. 

"It's similar to Engine 2," Assistant Fire Chief Michael Patterson told Patch in an interview. "We try to keep our pieces similar so it's easier for our guys to move from one to the other." 

The shiny new engine, with a price tag of $605,000, does give the department some new advantages while combatting fires and rescuing people from accidents.  

Patterson said the new engine has, among other things, two types of foam for battling blazes. One works for standard fires with wood, paper or other common fuel sources. The other foam is meant for chemical fires. 

Also, the equipment such as axes and pieces for entering buildings or cutting into vehicles are now individually safely attached in their own compartment so there is no risk of tools falling out on firefighters when they arrive at a scene. 

There is also a new tool for cutting into vehicles to rescue people from accidents. 

"This is the latest and greatest [the tool company] Hurst has to offer," Patterson said. "Cars change every year and the old equipment used to cut into them may not be as effective. This helps us keep up."
