Victims, police said, placed envelopes containing checks in their mailboxes. Checks were then taken from the mailboxes, altered and deposited before they could be picked up by postal workers, according to police.

Police advised residents around Fox Hill Road who mailed checks over the past month to review their bank statements.

Anyone who finds evidence of an altered check should contact their bank and the Burlington Police, police said.

Residents can additionally consider ways to protect themselves from check scams including handing their mail directly to a mail carrier or bringing it to a post office themselves.

Residents can use a gel or felt tip pen to write out checks, as writing from such pens can be harder to wash off checks than ballpoint pen writing.

Residents should also avoid sending cash in the mail, police said.
