BURLINGTON, MA — Polls closed Tuesday at 8 p.m. and votes are being counted for the state primary election determining candidates for federal, state, and local offices.
Voters across the state decided local state House and Senate races, plus races for Governor's Council, Clerk of Courts, Register of Deeds and other municipal offices in this year's cycle.
About 47% of ballots sent to voters had been returned by 7 a.m. Tuesday. There were 468,520 returned ballots, NBC 10 Boston reported.
Secretary William Galvin predicted voter turnout would be about 15%. Turnout is currently at 9.8%, according to NBC 10 Boston.
Most contested races between parties for state and federal offices, as well as Governor's Council, Register of Deeds and Clerk of Courts, do not occur until the November general election.
One contested race is among Republicans seeking to challenge U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren in November. Robert Antonellis, of Medford, Quincy City Councilor Ian Cain and former U.S. Attorney John Deaton are vying to face off against Warren.
The ballot is fairly thin across the state with the majority of state representative, state senator, and federal legislator elections uncontested at the primary level.
Early voting also began across the state on Aug. 24 and concluded Friday.
A full list of candidates running in the primary is available from the secretary of the commonwealth's website.
