Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Box at Constitution Plaza

The area in the Charlestown Navy Yard was shut down for about one hour.

The area around Constitution Plaza in the Charlestown Navy Yard was shut down for about an hour Friday afternoon while Massachusetts State Police investigated a suspicious package that had been left in the lobby of 1 Constitution St.

The report of a suspicious, unattended box came in at around 12:30 p.m. A State Police bomb squad arrived on the scene to investigate and x-rayed the box, determining that there was nothing hazardous inside, according to a State Police spokesman.

The “all clear” was given at about 1 p.m.

Charlestown resident MaryLee Trettenero was walking by the area shortly before 1 p.m. when she noticed there were "four to six state troopers blocking off the Warren Street entrance to Constitution Street near the Marriott Residence Inn."

"They said they were checking into something suspicious," Trettenero said.

Others took to Twitter to talk about the curious activity in the Navy Yard.

"... Suspicious package in Charlestown. Told to stay away from windows at work," one individual tweeted, sharing a picture of police cars blocking off the area.
