Boston Police Officers Honored for Acts of Bravery

Several Boston Police officers were honored for their acts of bravery at the 32nd Annual Trooper George Hanna Awards Tuesday. The awards are presented in honor and memory of Trooper George Hanna who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop back in 1983.

During a ceremony at the State House, 12 officers in total were honored for their “selfless and courageous” actions while in the line of duty. Seven of those officers hailed from Boston.

“I’m proud and happy for of all the officers honored today. They certainly deserve it. I know in Boston, our officers are out there everyday working hard to keep people safe,” Commissioner William Evans said. “And, again, it’s nice to see officers getting the recognition they deserve for all the hard work they do.”

Officers Paul Dok, Chris McCarthy and Mike Szegda were honored for saving the life of a woman threatening to jump from a downtown parking garage.

Officer Pam Wilson was recognized for single-handedly disarming and arresting two men wanted in connection to a shooting incident in Dorchester.

Officers John Burrows, Joe Connolly and Brian Delahanty, all members of the Youth Violence Strike Force, were recognized for taking more than 25 guns off the streets of Boston.

“The men and women who wear this uniform are very special and many times misrepresented and misunderstood. That’s why events like this are important,” Governor Charlie Baker said. “They remind us all of what happens virtually all the time when men and woman get up and go to work everyday in law enforcement and not knowing what to expect. They do it because they love their work. They do it because they love their colleagues. They do it because they know it’s important and it matters.”
