Charlestown Carjacker Arrested in Somerville: BPD

The incident was reported in the 400 block of Rutherford Avenue Monday night.

A man accused in a Charlestown carjacking was arrested in Somerville Monday after a search for the suspect, according to the Boston Police Department.

Around 8:30 Monday night, a man in the 400 block of Rutherford Avenue called police to report his car had been stolen. According to the victim, he had just started his car when the suspect suddenly opened his driver's side door, shouting, "Get out! I need your car!" Police said the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Daniell, of Arlington, had his hand hidden under his shirt and was gesturing "as though he was armed with a firearm."

According to police, the victim, fearful for his life, complied, and Daniell sped away, "nearly causing an accident as he pulled out into traffic."

Officers initiated a citywide alert, and police soon spotted the vehicle on Cambridge Street, where they attempted to pull it over. Boston Police said they eventually blocked the vehicle, forcing it to the side of the road without further incident on Parker Street in Somerville.

According to police, officers recovered several hypodermic needles and $139 from the victim, but did not find a firearm.

Somerville Police arrived on scene, and reportedly told Boston Police Daniell matched the description of an armed robber reported near 4 Broadway Street.

"When asked if he had just robbed someone, the suspect replied, 'Yeah,'" according to the Boston Police Department's account.

Officers later determined Daniell’s license had been suspended and that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for drug related offenses. He will appear in Boston Municipal Court on charges of Armed Carjacking and Operating a Motor Vehicle After Revocation or Suspension. He will be charged separately for the Somerville armed robbery, police said.
