Bill Maher commented on the recent departure of Zayn Malik from boy band One Direction by comparing the 22-year-old singer to the Boston Marathon bomber, who is currently on trial for the April 2013 tragedy that resulted in the death of three people and injury of more than 260 others.

The television host made the remarks on his political HBO program “Real Time with Bill Maher” last Monday and the segment was posted to YouTube.

“Just tell me two things, Zayn: Which one in the band were you? And where were you during the Boston Marathon?” Maher said to a laughing studio audience as a photo of Malik and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev flashed on the show’s house monitor.

“I won’t even call that a joke,” commented one YouTube user. “Even if I’m not a fan of 1D, I’d [be] mad because this is basic courtesy and respect for an individual.”

“What really disturbs me is that people were actually laughing with him,” wrote another YouTuber.
