CHELMSFORD, MA —The local fire department is about to update its communication radios, thanks to a $293,491 grant.

The Chelmsford Fire Department was one of some 290 fire departments across the country to win grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant program. All told, FEMA awarded some $42.3 million in direct assistance grants through the agency’s Fiscal Year 2019 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, Friday.

"Since 2001, the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards," according to a FEMA news release.
