David W. Bernard loved his family and he loved golf, and he liked to combine his two passions. Every July, he played in a father-son tournament — twice in one day — so he could do 18 holes with each of his sons, Mark and David Jr. Before his daughter, Jill, was married last summer, he arranged a foursome with his two boys and his soon-to-be son-in- law. And he taught his wife of 33 years, Nancy, how to play. Read more on the New York Times Portraits of Grief site.

Bernard was a specialist with the Internal Revenue Service and was on his way to a meeting at the World Trade Center when the first plane struck the towers. Bernard was struck by falling debris and died on Dec. 11 as a result of his injuries.

Andrew Curry Green: He crammed all kinds of activity into his days, skiing and kayaking like an expert and playing the drums à la Led Zeppelin. He loved art, and was looking forward to seeing the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. His interests crisscrossed time and space. “A friend of ours summed it up,” said Mrs. Curry Green, an artist who hopes to design a memorial to the trade center victims. “He is the person who could go from talking about a book that just came out to telling a knock-knock joke from sixth grade.” Read the rest of his tribute on the Portraits of Grief site.

Green had been living in Santa Monica, Calif., at the time of the attacks, but his roots were in Chelmsford and his name is included on the town’s 9-11 memorial. Green was aboard American Airlines Flight 11. He was on his way back to Los Angeles where he was director of business development for eLogic.

Friday’s memorial service will take place at fire headquarters at 50 Billerica Road at 10 a.m.
