I stand Opposed to Closing NECC /Concord farm and you should too

Preserve our open spaces for the wildlife habitat as well as assisting incarcerated individuals rebuild their lives.

I am writing to express my deep concern over the proposed development of the current minimum-security prison work release program into low-income housing in Concord. This proposal threatens to dismantle an invaluable community resource and irrevocably alter the character of our town.

The farm, comprising hundreds of acres of open space, represents one of the last bastions of undeveloped land in Concord. This green space is not only a sanctuary for multiple species of wildlife but also a vital part of our local ecosystem. As urban sprawl continues to consume natural habitats, preserving this farm is essential for maintaining the biodiversity that enriches our environment.

Beyond its environmental significance, the farm serves an important social function. It provides low-risk offenders with meaningful work opportunities as they transition back into society. This program is an exemplary model of rehabilitation, offering these individuals a chance to gain skills, build work ethics, and foster a sense of community responsibility. The loss of this program would disenfranchise these citizens and undermine the progress they have made toward reintegration.

While the need for affordable housing is undeniable, it should not come at the expense of such a multifaceted community asset. The citizens of Concord and the surrounding areas must recognize the long-term value of the farm and advocate for alternative solutions that do not sacrifice our green spaces or essential rehabilitation programs.

I urge my fellow residents to join me in opposing this development. Let us work together to find a balanced approach that addresses our housing needs without compromising our environmental integrity or the welfare of our rehabilitating citizens.
