CONCORD, MA — Massachusetts state parks that charge to park will be free over Veterans Day weekend, according to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Almost every state park in Massachusetts offers free parking from October to April, but a handful of very popular parks charge fees year-round. This weekend's free parking period will be good on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to DCR.

Some of the parks that charge year-round fees include Walden Pond in Concord, Borderland in Easton, Regatta Point in Worcester and North Point in Cambridge. Find a full list of state parks parking fees and periods on the DCR website.

"Their service and sacrifices continue to inspire us all, and this gesture is a small way to express our profound gratitude for their dedication to our country. We wish everyone a safe and
happy Veterans Day!" Veterans Services Secretary Jon Santiago said in a news release.

DCR is recommending park visitors check out some of the state's war memorials and battle sites, including Castle Island in Boston, Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven and the Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower at the summit of Mount Greylock (the road to the top is closed for the season).
