Traffic calming measures will not be implemented on Madison Street in Dedham, the Transportation Advisory Committee ruled earlier this week.

Based upon the data presented in an Initial Traffic Evaluation back in June, and the public meetings held to discuss the request, the TAC decided not to recommend the measures for several reasons.

According to the TAC, cars traveling along Madison Street are not in excess of 5 mph over the speed limit, a marker which determines whether calming measures are needed. The estimated 463 vehicles which travel the roadway are not considered to be excessive. And finally, the low number of crashes indicates there are no overriding safety issues in the area.

Even though Madison Street did not qualify for calming measures, the TAC will review additional requests from residents who feel traffic conditions have become worse.

In the meantime, ”Step2Kid Alert Visual Warning” systems can be purchased at Wal-Mart or many other retailers. The TAC also recommends working with neighbors to park cars on either side of the street to reduce the openness of the roadway, in turn slowing motorists.
