Big Second and Fourth Innings Lead Oliver Ames Softball Past Stoughton

Scoring three times in the second inning, and another four times in the fourth, the Oliver Ames softball team beat Stoughton 7-2 Monday at Stoughton High School.

The two big innings for the Tigers made the difference, with OA improving to 4-4. Stoughton, meanwhile, falls to 2-4, with a busy week still ahead, with games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. 

Nicole Bodette singled to lead off the bottom of the first for Stoughton, and two batters later Payton Pizzano doubled to drive in Bodette and give Stoughton the 1-0 lead. 

OA countered with three runs in the top of the second, taking a 3-1 lead. Jenna Morley had the big hit, with her single driving in two. 

Pizzano picked up another RBI in the bottom of the third, bringing Stoughton within one run, but OA broke the game open with the four-run fourth. Ariana Scurti had a double to lead the rally. 

Both teams were held scoreless over the final three innings.

Krystina Lincoln went 3-3 with 2 runs scored and Nicole Cosgrove went 3-4, driving in two, to lead OA on offense. 

OA coach Lindsey Allison credited her squad for turning in a total team victory, with success offensively, defensively, and pitching, with a solid outing from Mattea Sarnecki.

"The defense was great - the outfield, any hits that were over their head, they got to it quick, sprinted to the ball, working hard every play. Our pitcher had a great game. She had nine strikeouts. I just think it was a really great team victory," Allison said. "Everyone kind of worked together, put bats together, and it was a very effective offensive game."

"Offensively we're just not doing enough," Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said. "We came out strong right at the beginning...and then the bats kind of went silent. We're getting some hits but scattering them throughout the game. We have to put some together and come up with a timely hit." 

Stoughton plays at Quincy on Tuesday, while Oliver Ames hosts Sharon on Wednesday in another key Hockomock League Davenport Division contest.
