As the morning was coming to an end Tuesday, Town Clerk Jeremy Gillis said election day was "smooth and steady."

As of 11 a.m., 1358 ballots had been cast - approximately 679 voters - 91 ahead of September's Primary Elections.

Gillis said he expects the pace to increase in the afternoon and he expects approximately 2,500 voters to cast ballots today. There are approximately 15,000 active voters in town.

Local Selectmen candidates were standing by the entrance to the polling place at Oliver Ames High School.

"I'm cautiously optimistic," said Dan Smith, who had been at OA since 6:40 a.m. "It's a good turnout. It's nice to see a steady flow."

Smith said he has been joined throughout the day by friends, family and Easton parents.

Dottie Fulginiti said she arrived at the polls at about the same time as Smith.

"I'm feeling great," she said. "I'm very excited. We're very lucky to have such a beautiful sunny day."

Carol Nestler was also stationed at the entrance to the parking lot. Nestler arrived as polls opened and was joined by family and friends as well.

"The kids will be here after school. I'm putting them to work," she said jokingly.

The fourth candidate, Michael Maloney, was not present at the polling station late Tuesday morning.

Fulginiti credited all four candidates as the campaign season wound down.

"All four candidates ran a very good campaign," she said.

Election day is finally here.

Easton voters will be heading to the polls today to cast their ballot in two elections: local elections and the state-wide primaries for the special senate election.

Both elections will be held at Oliver Ames High School between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. According to Town Clerk Jeremy Gillis, voters should check their precinct before they go and vote to speed up the voting process.

Gillis also reminded residents that two elections will mean two processes.

"Voters will need to check-in and check-out twice if they vote in both Elections, however they do not have to vote in both elections," he said.

Classes at OA will still be in session and Gillis recommended avoiding the hours of 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m. during bus drop-off and departure.

Locally, Easton residents will vote in two contested races. Four residents (Michael Maloney, Dottie Fulginiti, Carol Nestler and Dan Smith) are running for two seats on the Board of Selectmen and two people (Bill Anderson and Robert MacLennan) are running for the Board of Health.

Partly because of the mixed election, Gillis said he is having a hard time deciding how many people will arrive at the polls today.

"My gut tells me about 2500 voters," he said. "My math extrapolation with absentee ballot numbers says closer to 1600."
