Cape Cod Man Indicted In Mom's Death: DA
A 23-year-old faces a manslaughter charge after the death of his mother in 2024 on Cape Cod.
SANDWICH, MA — A Cape Cod man was indicted for the 2024 death of a woman — his mother — in Sandwich, the Cape and Islands District Attorney announced.
Thomas Hayes, 23, of Sandwich, was indicted by a grand jury for manslaughter and assault and battery on a person over 60 or disabled that caused serious bodily injury.
On July 24, 2024, EMTs and law enforcement responded to a 911 call from a home in Sandwich. Upon arrival, first responders and police located an unconscious 71-year-old woman on the ground in the second-floor bedroom, bleeding from a laceration to her head. The investigation revealed she was Hayes's mother.

Hayes told the 911 operator and law enforcement that he pushed her, causing her to fall. She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital where they determined that she suffered a broken neck in addition to the head laceration.
She died on July 30.

Hayes was on probation at the time of the incident, prompting a one-year jail sentence for probation violation.
As for this case, Hayes will be arraigned at a later date, officials said.
