Cape Cod Town Preps For Future With Recent Property Purchase

Sandwich recently purchased 86 acres of land to develop for water quality, preservation and future wastewater infrastructure needs.

SANDWICH, MA — The date of a recent property purchase made by the Town of Sandwich was important.

On April 22, 2025, Earth Day, the town finalized a $3.3 million purchase of more than 86.5-acres of undeveloped property for water quality, preservation and future wastewater infrastructure needs, officials said.

The property, which encompasses three parcels on Discovery Hill Road and Kiah’s Way, was authorized and approved for sale to the town in late March by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts.

The purchase was made with funds allocated by Town Meeting through the town’s Water Infrastructure Investment Fund (WIIF).

Town officials said the purchase was an example of present actions directly impacting the future of the community.

“The purchase of this unique and rare large property offering is a major investment in the future of the Town of Sandwich to meet its anticipated wastewater and water resource protection needs,” said Sandwich Town Manager George Dunham.

“The property acquisition will provide the town with sufficient acreage, should a regional wastewater treatment solution at Joint Base Cape Cod not be achievable, to meet 100% of projected volume from all phases of its Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan.”
