Harwich Mariners Win Cape Cod Baseball League Title

CAPE COD, MA — The Cape Cod Baseball League is proud to crown the Harwich Mariners as the 2024 Cape League Champions following their game three 4-3 victory over the Bourne Braves at Doran Park in Bourne. The championship marks the organization’s sixth title (1933, 1983, 1987, 2008, 2011) and manager Steve Englert’s third at the helm.

“This was a group that came out here every day,” said Englert. “Didn’t matter what the record was. They just played hard. Our attitude for the last eight games of the season was that we just had to get in. We could do damage (if we got in) and we did.”

Commissioner John Castleberry named Wilson Weber (Oregon State) as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. Weber tallied a .375 batting average in the playoffs alongside a .965 OPS, scoring two runs, along with nine hits, including three XBH, and six RBI and four walks.

How They Did It

Opening Round

The East’s third-seeded Harwich Mariners outlasted the Chatham Anglers 7-5 in the opening round. The Mariners tied things up in the ninth when Aiden Robbins (Seton Hall) singled to score Cam Maldonado (Northeastern), who led off the inning with a triple. Wilson Weber (Oregon State) had the game-winning hit, scoring Robbins.

Second Round

The Mariners continued their playoff success in the second round, sweeping the top-seeded Y-D Red Sox in two games, 10-2 and 5-1. Harwich put up a 10 spot on the Red Sox in game one, sending across three runs in the opening frame. In game two, Donovan Burke (James Madison) threw eight innings and gave up one run to guide Harwich to their first Cape League Championship Series since 2019. Macon Winslow (Duke) had three RBI for the Mariners.

Finals

Harwich struck first in the series opener, defeating Bourne 7-3. Cade Kurland (Florida) and Matt Scannell (Wake Forest) added two RBI and one hit to lead the Mariners to victory. After falling in game two at home, Harwich took care of business in the decisive third game, topping the two-time defending champs 4-3. The Mariners got on the board early, scoring on a Winslow single in the second inning. In the third inning, the Mariners extended their lead when Weber doubled and Kurland singled to each pickup RBIs. Cam Maldonado extended their lead in the seventh inning, knocking an RBI double to help Harwich secure the Cape League title.
