Wind Turbine Debris Reaches Falmouth Beaches: What To Know

The debris from a broken Vineyard Wind wind turbine blade continues to be found on beaches around Cape Cod and the islands.

FALMOUTH, MA — Debris from a broken Vineyard Wind wind turbine blade has been spotted in the water and shore of four Falmouth beaches, officials belive.

Town officials said they are "actively monitoring the situation and taking action to remove debris that washes ashore, protect public safety, and hold Vineyard Wind responsible for the cost of cleanup."

Vineyard Wind cleanup crews will begin removing debris from the water and the beach today, Falmouth officials added.

The beaches affected are:

  • Black Beach
  • Chapoquoit Beach
  • Woodneck Beach
  • Old Silver Beach

This comes weeks after a "significant part" of a broken wind turbine blade closed Nantucket beaches after littering them with debris detached from the turbine this morning, officials said. Since, the debris has been spotted around the Cape and islands.

If residents spot debris on the beach they are asked to direct a lifeguard to it rather than dealing with it themselves.
