The Friends of John Coltrane Memorial Concert, Inc. (fJCMC), in collaboration with Northeastern University’s Office of Student Affairs and the College of Social Sciences & Humanities, presents “Transition(s)” which will pay special tribute to Dr. Leonard L. Brown, co-founder and artistic JCMC visionary, who passed earlier this year.

This 42nd John Coltrane Memorial Concert, to be held on Saturday October 5th, features a 14-piece JCMC Ensemble under the musical direction of Dr. Carl Atkins, who is creating a special performance repertoire in tribute to Dr. Brown, as well as offering an opportunity to explore Coltrane's "Transitions", an album released after his death, and for many, representing a bridge between Coltrane's more classic compositions to his more experimental works in his final years.

These Coltrane works will be presented in new arrangements showcasing the 2019 JCMC Ensemble’s great musicianship, prowess and flexibility. This year’s ensemble, many who have made multiple annual JCMC appearances, will feature: Carl Atkins (sax), Tyler Bonilla (trombone), Phil Grenadier (trumpet), Yoron Israel (drums), John Lockwood (bass), Dorsey Minns (trombone), Mike Peipman (trumpet), Bill Pierce (sax), Randy Pingrey (trombone), George W. Russell, Jr. (piano), Stan Strickland (sax, vocals), Billy Thompson (sax), Bobby Tynes (sax) and Bijon Watson (trumpet).
