Fall is in the air and the students welcomed the change in season by making a gluten free apple crisp, yum! Not only is cooking an enjoyable activity for the students, it is also a lesson that embodies all the goals of Practical Life; order, concentration, coordination, and independence. The work is prepared to give the children independence in putting together the ingredients in the proper order; peeling, chopping, mixing, and assembly. The children peel the apples using an apple peeler, they cut it using a child-safe wavy knife, mix the apples with the spices, and prepare the crumble. The children see how the dish comes together, and then we bake! Next, of course, is clean up, and the children wash the dishes, table, and countertops. The class devours the crumble and shares them with other teachers and staff members as well. When building a loving, joyful community, cooking never begins too early, and is always in style!
