Maria Montessori referred to the classroom as the Children’s House. The lead teacher prepares the classroom environment and materials that foster independence and are developmentally appropriate for children of all ages. Children are then free to explore the classroom and choose work that interests them.

Care of the environment is a Montessori Practical Life activity that helps children coordinate their movements, gain independence, and work toward becoming contributing members of society. One example of this task is taking care of the classroom pet parakeets. After the lead teacher gives students a lesson on accomplishing this task, the students are responsible for the following:

1. Retrieve containers from the cage.

2. Access the bin where the bird seed is kept and refill the food container.

3. Empty and fill the bowl with fresh water.

4. Carefully put the containers back in the cage.

5. They can even talk to the birds, so they don’t feel lonely :)

After practicing these activities in the classroom, the child is prepared to take care of the environment around them. These actions then become spontaneous outside the school, such as taking care of their pets at home, cleaning up after dinner, sweeping or mopping, etc.

By giving children the vocabulary, actions, and steps required to build awareness and responsiveness of those around them, we help them realize their potential and impact on society.
