3-Time Patriots Champion Pat Chung Arrested, Legal Problems Could Compound

The arrest could bring additional legal troubles for the three-time champion who had cocaine charges conditionally dropped last year.

Patrick Chung, the popular ex-Patriot who won three Super Bowls with New England, was arrested Sunday and charged with assault and battery on a family member and vandalizing property, according to The Athletic's Jeff Howe.

Chung, 33, is set to be arraigned Tuesday in Quincy.

"Best day of my life," Chung tweeted just before 4 p.m. Sunday. It's unclear what he was referencing.

The arrest could spell further legal issues for Chung. The former safety was indicted on cocaine possession charges in 2019, but the state of New Hampshire opted to conditionally dismiss those charges in early 2020. One of those conditions was staying out of legal trouble for two years. If he violated the terms of the agreement, New Hampshire could prosecute him on those charges.

Chung had no prior criminal record before the cocaine charge. Prosecutors said he was found with a small amount of cocaine at his home.

Chung was drafted by the Patriots in 2009 and spent all but one year of his 11-year career in New England. He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns, then announced his retirement in March of this year.

The hard-hitting safety played defense on three title teams, leaving with injuries in the Super Bowl loss against the Eagles and next year's championship victory over the Rams, the latter being the last game he'd play in the NFL.
