FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham is a finalist in three categories highlighting community leadership and innovation in sustainability and clean energy.

The recognition comes during Massachusetts Clean Energy Week, and the categories include:

  • Green Community of the Year – City of Framingham
  • Green Mayor of the Year – Mayor Charlie Sisitsky
  • Sustainability Coordinator of the Year – Shawn Luz

In announcing the recognition, Kristin Rode, Executive Director of the Northeast Renewable Energy Coalition, praised Framingham as "a model for municipalities across the Commonwealth and the nation."

“Our tour of Framingham wasn’t just a look at municipal projects, it was a front row seat to the future of local government,” said Rode. “What the City has accomplished represents nothing less than a declaration that Framingham refuses to accept the status quo when better solutions exist. From cutting-edge geothermal energy projects to sustainable schools and transformative public transit initiatives, Framingham demonstrates that economic prosperity and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.”

The Coalition’s leadership also highlighted Sisitsky and Luz's work in the field.

“Mayor Sisitsky’s leadership has created something truly remarkable here,” Rode said. “And under the coordination of Shawn Luz, Framingham has shown Massachusetts what sustainability leadership looks like. This is not simply a collection of projects, it is a movement of public servants proving every day that local government can be a force for transformation.”

Massachusetts Clean Energy Week will spotlight Framingham as one of only a handful of “Spotlight Cities” this year, officials said.

“Framingham is deeply honored to be recognized in this way,” said Sisitsky. “This recognition reflects the work of so many dedicated public servants, community partners, and residents who share the vision of a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Framingham.”

Award winners will be announced in October.
