MassDEP: Contractor To Demolish General Chemical Warehouse in Framingham
FRAMINGHAM – The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) said a contractor will begin demolition of a warehouse building located at the former General Chemical property in Framingham.
The demolition contractor is currently working with City of Framingham officials to obtain all necessary demolition permits, including utility terminations.
The contractor plans to begin site preparation activities the week of July 8, including the installation of temporary construction fencing and erosion controls. These activities are scheduled to be finished by mid-July.
The demolition of the warehouse is anticipated to begin late-July or early-August and finish before the first day of school. The former General Chemical site is located adjacent to Harmony Grove Elementary School.
As stated during a June 4 public meeting, demolition activities will be conducted in accordance with standard industry practices and all appropriate measures will be taken during the demolition to ensure there are no off-property impacts while this work is completed.
After the warehouse is demolished, MassDEP will be able to conduct additional subsurface investigations, including soil and groundwater sampling, to determine the location and magnitude of contamination within the footprint of the warehouse building.
This information will allow MassDEP to develop the most effective cleanup plan. Clean up of the contamination is expected by summer 2025.
Questions can go to MassDEP’s Andrew Friedmann at 617-894-3543 or via email at andrew.friedmann@mass.gov.
