4 Ways To Attract Butterflies

The right plants and food can draw a crowd.

What is more beautiful than a garden regularly visited by butterflies?

Here are 4 tips offered by Perrault Nurseries manager Mary Russell to draw the winged beauties to your yard.

1. Select the right perennials. Salvia, bee blam, hollyhocks and milkweed are popular with butterflies.

2. Add a dash of annuals. Impatiens and marigolds are also appealing.

3. Feed them sweetly. A bowl of Gatorade and/or a sugar and water mix will help sustain them. At Perreault Nurseries, they soak a sponge in the liquid and place it atop a post coated with cooking oil to deter ants.

4. Garnish with parsley. They also like this dinner plate special. Who knew?
