 3. On this day 110 years ago, then vice president Theodore Roosevelt uttered the famous phrase “Speak softly and carry a big stick’’ at the most unlikely of places, the Minnesota State Fair. Just 12 days later, William McKinley died from injuries he suffered during an assassination attempt and Roosevelt became president.

4. And here’s a sobering bit of historical perspective for those of us still frustrated by the delay to the start of school and the power outages. On this date in 1935, the Labor Day hurricane hit the Florida Keys and killed 423 people.
