Chief Offers Tips to Stay Safe

Avoid candles and reserve 911 for emergencies only.

Chief Normand A. Crepeau Jr. offers the following tips to stay safe when the storm hits.
Do not call 911 unless there is a legitimate emergency. Two dispatchers will be on during the storm, but all non-urgent calls will be diverted to an automated message.
If the power goes out, do not use candles. The risk of fire is too great.
If wires are down, do not touch or approach them. You might think they are cable wires, but that could be a deadly mistake. Wait for the power company.
Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
Close all interior doors. Secure and brace external doors.
Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm - winds will pick up again.
Take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level.
Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
Check on elderly neighbors or those who might need assistance during the storm.
