Common Blooms with Activity

Garden Club will host annual plant sale Saturday.

The Grafton Garden Club will be holding the annual plant sale and raffle on the Common from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14. The event benefits the scholarship and grant fund.

The Garden Club presents scholarships to students furthering their education in a horticultural field and grants to educators in the Grafton Public School District to be used for projects and creative efforts designed to motivate the student's interest in plant and soil sciences, botany, horticulture, and the environment.

This is an opportunity to grow vegetables that are safe to eat and cost less than from the stores. Enjoy fresh. homegrown herbs in favorite recipes.

Perennials provide color and interest for years to come. Annuals provide color and interesting textures from first bloom to frost and can prove to be cost-effective when considering the length of the bloom time.

This year, the plants are provided by Mapel Plants on Brigham Hill Road here in Grafton. The Grafton Garden Club members were busy plopping the plugs into the six packs and pots in order to ensure the plants are ready for the sale.

Grafton residents have donated perennials from their yards, so the plants will grow in Grafton. Seeds will be for sale, too.

In addition to plants for sale, the event will include vendors and crafters. There will be a barbecue lunch available, the famous Boy Scout chowder and desserts.

Con the Common will be holding a wine tasting from noon until 2 p.m. Pony rides and other activities for the kids will also be available.

Advance-sale tickets for the June 12 Grafton Historic Homes and Garden Tour will available along side the last few copies of the Grafton Celebrates 275 Cookbook. Credit cards will be accepted this year, along with checks and cash.

There will also be a raffle, with a variety of items to complement the home and garden.
