Compassion Is the Best Medicine
Tufts students offer free veterinary care to an underserved population.

Mayra Rondon’s love for her miniature pinscher, Sello, is priceless.
Unfortunately for her, his veterinary care is not.
She spent a lot of money the last time her dog needed care. But Tuesday, to her relief and gratitude, his care was free.

Veterinary students from in Grafton and Becker College in Worcester teamed up to provide free care for animals of residents at Belmont Towers, a Worcester Housing Authority property on Belmont Street in Worcester.
This is the fourth year the free clinics have been offered to underserved populations that might otherwise not be able to afford veterinary care. This year, about a dozen such clinics were held.

The veterinary students, under the supervision of Dr. Paula Northrop, a veterinarian on the Becker College staff, gave exams and shots and did minor procedures such as nail trimming to as many as 20 animals at each clinic.
Tuesday’s patients include a vocal black cat and a kissy bulldog name Buddha.
Rondon said the students provided “excellent’’ care to Sello.
“They give [the residents’ pets] what they need,’’ she said. “They really help us.’’
