Don't Forget Seat Belts This Weekend

Click It or Ticket continues through early June.

With prom and graduation season, as well as Memorial Day weekend, and the start of the summer parties ramping up, law enforcement reminder drivers that they will be on the road this weekend looking for unbelted drivers through the   "Click It or Ticket" initiative.

This mobiliation began May 14 and will continue through June 3.

State Police added that more than a quarter of Massachusetts drivers still fail to buckle up.

"Due to the seriousness of this issue, the State Police and more than 125 local police departments have announced the adoption of zero tolerance policies on seat belt violations,'' the Massachusetts State Police said in a prepared statement.

As part of a nationwide effort to save lives, the will be extra vigilant to ensure that Grafton motorists are buckling up during the "Click It or Ticket" mobilization, Grafton Police Chief Normand A. Crepeau Jr. has said.

The message is simple: Massachusetts drivers and passengers should always wear their seat belts or be ready to face the consequences. 

Presently, the fine is $25, and it is a secondary violation. That means you must be stopped for another motor vehicle violation in order to get cited for not wearing a seatbelt.

That may change.

There is a bill before the legislature to make it a primary offense.
