Fuel Leak Forces Glen St. to Close

EL Harvey truck leaks hydraulic fluid on its maiden voyage.

An EL Harvey & Sons vehicle on its first trip through town leaked hydraulic fluid on Glen Street, forcing the street to be closed for clean-up.

The vehicle was on its “maiden voyage,’’ Chief Michael Gauthier said. “It only had about 600 miles on it.’’

The spill began near 21 Glen St. and continued across the nearby Westborough town line. Because a portion of the spill happened in Westborough, that town’s Fire Department responded to the scene as well.

The exact amount of fluid released in the spill was not immediately known. Regulations require environmental officials to be notified when more than 10 gallons are spilled.

EL Harvey handled the incident correctly, the chief said, by notifying the Department of Environmental Protection. The town was called to spread sand on the spill.

A street sweeper will pick up the remains of the spill and Clean Harbors, which specializes in the clean-up of environmentally sensitive material, will haul it away, the chief said.

A tow truck was brought in to haul the EL Harvey vehicle away.

The lack of rain and minimal amount of traffic on Glen Street, which is a back road, helped minimize the spread of the oil, Chief Gauthier said.
