Gas Leak Delays Start at Grafton High

The scene was cleared within minutes, the fire chief reports.

The opening ofl was delayed a few minutes this morning after an odor of gas was detected in the building.

The odor was reported at 7:10 a.m., before school had started for the day, Chief Michael Gauthier said.

As students began arriving to school, either on the bus or by private vehicles, they were not allowed in the building until the origin of the leak could be determined.

Knobs to the burners of the heating system had been cracked open, causing the odor, Gauthier said. The problem was fixed within minutes, he said.

Students were initially allowed into the auditorium, then the building was given the all-clear and school went on as usual, Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings said.

The Fire Department cleared the scene at 7:30 a.m., Gauthier said.
