Health Board Issues Septic Reminders
Residents need to be aware of regulations, board members said.

The t would like to remind property owners with septic systems about some safety and compliance concerns that come up frequently.Â
If your septic tank/pump chamber has a cover that is at ground level, it is important that it be secure to prevent accidental falls. Plastic covers should be bolted to the tank or be covered with dirt; concrete covers should be solid with no cracks.
If you have any concerns about a cover in your yard, you can call or email the Grafton Health Department at 508-839-5335 x 119 or healthdept@grafton-ma.gov

If your septic tank is equipped with an effluent tee filter, that filter must be cleaned minimally once per year.
There are few septic systems in Grafton designed to accommodate garbage grinders. Even if the garbage grinder states that it is approved for use with septic systems, the State of Massachusetts Title V 310 CMR 15.000 has specific requirements which include that the septic tank have dual chambers and the leaching area be designed 50 percent larger than it would normally be.

Use of a garbage grinder can expedite the demise of your system by causing it to fail prematurely.
Any projects that will result in change of footprint of your house (such as additions or decks) or changes that increase useable floor space such as basement renovation or addition/removal of structures will require compliance with Title V 310 CMR 15.000 set-back and compliance requirements and a sign-off from the Grafton Health Department prior to Building Department approval.
